Truck Driver

Veteran

Jessica Letellier Biddeford, ME

I have an 18 wheeler that I am looking to get filled. I am a small business looking to expand. I have posted my position opening on indeed and and seemingly enough am coming up short. I am looking for a qualified, safe and very healthy driver who holds a valid class A license. Any other advice for finding that perfect employee and tips on how to be a boss in a male dominated field.

Hi Jessica

I have employed a lot of drivers in my life - 10's of thousands : it’s very hard to to find and keep the right person for a company with one truck. Assuming you can drive the truck, if I were you I would look for a helper that wants to be trained as a driver. Find someone working in a job less attractive and observe them as qualified and ask them. When we started our company my partner Darryl and I would go to Pink's hotdogs in Los Angeles and recruit the guys cooking; we also hired valet parking people. Offer them a better opportunity. How about from Mcdonald’s or an Uber driver. Try to figure out a way to incent the person to stay with you.
As for the female boss issue, I worked mainly with female management. Most people just want to do their best and get the job done ; it doesn't matter what gender their boss is.
I think your mindset can have a positive impact. My personal experience is the issue doesn’t exist except in rare exceptions.
Thank you for serving our country !
Regards ,
Ethan

Jessica....nothing worse then a bad hire...all of us have done it.....biz is good now, number of drivers is going down, many retirements coming up on drivers....you know the story.... go old school....suggest ad at local truck stops...perhaps someone would be a good fit is one that does not want to be a cog in some corporate wheel...play the women owned card...my friend did it my old biz...Cable TV... for her the contracts just kept on coming. Boss stuff...let the employee be not afraid of asking too many question or advice....only you can see the big picture....back off....if the driver has the smarts...you do not need to micro-manage....let the driver be your eyes and ears for opportunity. Good luck.

Hi Jessica!
First and foremost, many thanks for your service!

Try using a group FB page in your area, Glassdoor and you mentioned Indeed. Even your own FB page to help spread the word.. If you don't have a FB page, it might be a good idea to get one for you or your business. There's also Craigslist. It does spread the word! Hope this helps!

Kind regards,
Liz Campanelli
