I'm in the midst of transitioning in July of this year as a Nuclear Electrician and should have my BS in Energy Systems before I separate. I would like to dip into the sports industry as a writer, player operations, public relations, etc. I was a freelance sports writer for a year and have a deep knowledge in sports. I also am currently doing my shore tour as a recruiter and nuclear coordinator so I have sales, customer service, and public affairs experience.
My question is whether or not this is a good idea to look into a career change after getting the education and experience in something completely unrelated and not within the area of expertise? I have a wife and bought a home together, and I'm scared that a career shift will not provide for our family since there is a high demand in Electrical Engineering/technicians.

I don't know about the sport industry, although I believe if that is where your passion lies then go for it!
I started a new career in real estate at 31 years of age and I am glad I took the risk.
With a good work ethic and determination, you will make any decision you make work!

In short, it is not a bad idea. Now is a great time to “re-brand” yourself. As far as the opportunity for success with the switch, I would encourage you to find someone in the industry to network with and ultimately someone that will believe in you and bring you on board.

While the only direct experience I have with the industry is watching tons of sports, I have a couple suggestions! I recommend checking out the Community section on this site. You can search for Advisors by industry and location, to try to find someone that may have experience in the field of sports directly, or works in specific areas like public relations: https://acp-advisornet.org/community/advisors
LinkedIn also has several Veteran Mentor Groups that may be helpful. You can use the LinkedIn search features to find people in the sports industry, to privately message and start a conversation.
