Fleeing California, onward to Texas

Veteran

Manuel Silva Moreno Valley, CA

As I consider fleeing California, and based on those who currently live and work there, how should I be tailoring my education and resume to meet the needs of the Texas job market.

I would like to say I am pretty well rounded when it comes to education and experience, but any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Manny

What kind of jobs are you looking for in Texas?

Manuel,
Before you develop your LI profile, before you reach out for mentors, do consider developing a focus for what you want to do. Consider using assessment, i believe there are resources on this site as well as careeronestop.org
The more focused you are the more people will be able to help you.
Is it education, in a non-profit, as a trainer, knowing how you want to do what you want to do will help you no matter what state you are applying in.
Best,
Susana

Manuel,
I am retiring from the Air Force after 22 years and have found LinkedIn to be a valuable assets when it comes to gathering information. I do several searches for people that already have the job I would like and save their profiles to read and see if my experience and education match up. Also I am not sure if you have been through TAPS but making targeted resumes for specific jobs is where you will want to go. Also check out other web sites like indeed and search for the job you want to make sure those requirements are on your resume. Just food for thought, hope that helps.

Dear Manuel:
We'd love to have you come to Texas! Folks here, particularly in Houston, are very friendly with a can-do attitude. We would welcome somebody who wants to invest career time and effort in helping people have better lives. Because our population is growing fast, we have to open new schools every year. Perhaps you could be the Jr. ROTC guy at these new schools, inspiring young people to serve, giving them a feeling of belonging, and guiding them to productive lives in the community. Try the Cy-Fair, Katy and Fort Bend Independent School Districts, as they are growing the fastest.
Best wishes for your success!

Drew, thank you for your reply, I certainly appreciate your assistance.

While law enforcement has been a labor of love for me, the growth and development that has occurred while in that field has led me to realize and believe there are potential opportunities in which I can serve society in ways much deeper than conducting criminal investigations (reactive).

I guess what I am really looking for, is an opportunity to work proactively with people. While law enforcement is an important field and crucial to the stabilization of our country, I think we can do a better job in serving others in a way that would deter crime and promote wholesome living via clear values and positive beliefs.

What I cant get away from is the general concept of people and helping them be better, do better, and want better.

I appreciate your line of questioning as if compels me to expound and articulate what it is I maybe looking for. I trust the experience of the advisors within this community (including yours) to read this post and perhaps have a shared experience in feeling the way I do, resulting in the discovery of an avenue or pathway to a career that proved to be much more than just a career.

I apologize if my answer comes across as rambling, but in the absence of truly knowing all the possible opportunities that exist, I am leaving myself open as well as preparing myself with educational pursuits that center around people.

Thanks again.

Manuel: I do not work in Texas, but I know a number of veterans who do now in a variety of fields. I would ask though, based upon your long tenure in a law enforcement type role, is that the field you'd like to continue working in or would you rather do something else? That might help people determine how to advise you.

Best,
Drew
