Any employment opportunities in Indiana for someone with a possible dishonorable discharge?

Veteran

Joseph Soewardie Fort Pol, LA

I am currently going through a bad misconduct with a possible dishonorable discharge with the military. I have already admitted to my wrong doings and I accept whatever punishment the military gives me. I am truck driver in the Army but also have landscaping, dispatching, Human Resource and supervisor/management experience. I have a family of five that I love and want to support and I ask for anyone that would know any employers that would hire me in the state of Indiana? I am also willing to go any other state in the US but I would prefer to be in Indiana with my family. I am more then willing to explain the situation entirely to anyone that is reading this. Please help.

Hey Joe,
First of all, whatever happened in the Army will be behind you soon. All that matters is where you're going, not where you are now. We all make mistakes, just don't make the same mistake twice. I myself was suspended from high school and almost got thrown out altogether, but I did graduate, put it behind me, and I'm doing just fine. You can do the same.

An idea about employment now. I was in the restaurant industry and my wife was in the hotel industry for years. Those two employers are more forgiving and easier to get a start in. For instance, I knew a guy that got out of jail, started working for a big chain, and after 5 years he was a GM. Then he quit to open his own restaurant. Hard work, adaptability, and a great attitude was what it took.

By the way, I see that you're at Fort Polk. I live in Hattiesburg. Contact me anytime and I'll try to help.

Look up, the future will be brighter.

Joseph,
Your self-confidence is key to pursuing any job or profession. I understand you accept responsibility. Do what you need to do to forgive yourself and start building your self-esteem.
"Doing anything" means you can't do anything. What are your skills and interests?
You need to work with a career counselor, try onestops for assessment; search it on Google it's available in every state and there are many online resources.
Go through the community resources on this website and identify people that can help you move forward.
You are young and need to build your career focus.
Best,

Its good to know when we have missed the mark, that way we can implement the four 'R's : Repent, take Responsibility, demonstrate Remorse, effect Repair. Truly implementing these, you can improve your outlook.

As for getting a job, what skills do you offer the marketplace ? What skills are you trained in ?

One vocation that could help you is landscaping. All you need is some inexpensive lawn tools, and some posting on Nextdoor.com or OfferUp.com , and you would be able to at least earn some kind of money during the summer months.

Another option to consider is going back to school to learn about some skills that are in high demand. Be careful not to go into too much debt if you take this route.

A third option to consider is going to work for a ministry after you have fully disclosed your situation. Some pastors would need things done around like building repair, or cooking for homeless, that you might actually enjoy doing.

Good luck.

Joseph,

I echo Tim's specific advice regarding the restaurant and hotel industries.

You mentioned living and working in Indiana. Putting aside the nature of your discharge for the moment and focusing solely on employment prospects, my questions are:

1. Where in Indiana? Indy? NW Indiana? Generally, you may find more opportunity in the larger metropolitan areas.

2. What sort of work are you looking to acquire? Don't reply "anything." Think of three sectors. Perhaps you'll begin with Tim's two suggestions. Add a third sector. Begin now searching for opportunities. You need not apply just yet. Just see what's out there.

3. To keep your search manageable, consider using the LAMP List, a tool that Steve Dalton developed. He wrote a book called "The Two Hour Job Search". http://universityx.beyondb-school.com/video.aspx?id=Topic_Company_Research_Text1

I recommend you purchase the book, then read and use the tool.

Finally, John Green's advice could be meaningful. School is a good idea, and working with ministry could be valuable on many levels.

Regardless of the nature of the discharge, I'd be bold to say that it's more important to minimize any gap in employment, even if you begin with part time while you go to school.
