Deloitte Impact Day: Experience versus Education

Veteran

Andrew Kretz Athens, AL

Good afternoon and thank you for providing your expertise in the advisor role. I retired from the Army in 2013 with my MBA, and I am currently pursuing my Doctorate of Business Administration. I have experience in leadership, teaching, human resources, and so forth. From reviewing the Deloitte website, I came across the Human Capital link, which is where the focus of my study is. My doctoral study concentrates on the strategies HR Managers use to eradicate workplace bullying from their organizations.

Is there a certain amount of experience versus education required in Deloitte?

Do the Consultants specialize in a given area or multiple areas?

Do your Consultants travel or do they stay in their specific city?

Would getting certified by the John Maxwell Team have any effect in joining the Deloitte Company?

Humm . . . . it's not just about "education or experience; " It is about TALENT, too. Thus, I refer you to this assessment instrument (FREE): http://www.humanmetrics.com/hr/jtypesresult.aspx

If you need help translating the results into meaningful information, feel free to contact me at hlstevens@att.net. This assessment with give you letter and number results. Share them with me - it should look something like I-50 N-10 T-40 J-20 - at hlstevens@att.net.

Also, get the book WHAT COLOR IS YOUR PARACHUTE by Bolles. GREAT information in there and it is updated every year.

Hi Andrew,

I also recommend looking into the International Coach Federation (ICF) certification for leadership development and coaching.

Hi Andrew,

Thank you for your service and your questions!

With regards to experience vs. education - Generally speaking, this depends on the client and engagement in question. I do not believe that many of the Human Capital positions require a Doctorate, but it certainly makes your resume more valuable!

Consultant Specialization - Again, the answer here is that it depends on the level (Consultant, Senior Consultant, Manager, etc.) as to how specialized practitioners are in a given area. With that said, there are plenty of examples where practitioners specialize in multiple disciplines within a given market offering like Human Capital.

Travel - Keeping with the theme, it really depends on the project, industry, and given geographic area in question. For example, if you are aligned within the Federal practice and live in the greater Washington, DC area, it's highly likely that the travel requirements will be minimal; however, if you are in the commercial practice and live in a smaller market, it's quite possible that you will support an engagement that requires travel on a more regular basis.

Certifications - I am not familiar with the John Maxwell Team so it is difficult to assess if that would effect how your resume would be evaluated. While I'm not personally aligned to the Human Capital practice, I know that the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) certification carries some weight.

Kyle and Daniel,

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question(s). I appreciate it, I knew a little about SHRM, but not to much on ICF. I will look into these two associations further to see which if not both could assist me in the future.
