Deloitte Impact Day - Any pitfalls to avoid when seeking opportunites at Deloitte?

Veteran

Tim Davis Chula Vista, CA

Thank you to all the Deloitte advisors who have offered great information to all the questions so far, I really appreciate your advice and insight. Having spent my life so far in or around the service, this transition process is simultaneously exciting and overwhelming! I am positive that I will pursue consulting as my new career and Deloitte is the company I will be targeting.

With that being said, is there anything I should specifically avoid as I attempt to seek opportunities at Deloitte? For example, when submitting my resume should I avoid attempting to cast myself as "jack of all trades" or target only 1 or 2 specific areas?

Hi Tim,

Thank you for your extensive service to our country!

The biggest recommendation that I have is to tailor your resume to whatever position(s) you apply to. By that I mean don't have a branding line saying that you are interested in IT systems integration if you are applying to an internal audit position. Tweaking your resume (i.e. prioritizing the order of items, refining the language, etc.) to highlight your experience in such a way that compliments the specific requisition is a great practice for getting your resume to the top of a pile.

As for pitfalls, I won't say there is something specific to avoid aside from the example above, but I would also recommend identifying an area of interest where you would like to continue your career. Professional services is a vast industry, and Deloitte has a plethora of offerings in a wide variety of industries. Narrowing down what type of consulting is of interest to you can help you refine your search and subsequently shape your resume accordingly.

If you have any specific questions with regards to offerings, how to shape your resume, etc., please do not hesitate to message me or any of my colleagues as we are all happy to help.

Hi Tim,

I would advise you to send out your job-specific resume(s) once you've identified positions that are of interest to you. It would be difficult for a general HR department to know where to send your general resume if you're not ready for work yet and/or not sure exactly what area you're targeting. Happy to help offline, feel free to email me directly if you'd like!

Thanks!

Hi Tim, thank you for your service. Great question, I wouldn’t say there are any pitfalls per se, but generally speaking when applying for a position at Deloitte you want to tailor your application to the position. ACP contains a wealth of curated content/topics on writing resumes, cover letters, and general career tips that you can explore on “Browse Topics.” I think this is a convenient place to get started without getting bogged down in the ubiquitous “career advice” websites.

Hi Tim,

Thanks for reaching out and thank you for your service!

In terms of submitting your resume, I would advise you to tailor your resume specifically for the position to which you're applying - for example, if you are applying to an accountant position, you'll want to showcase and highlight your experience in the areas of accounting, finance, audit, etc.

You could also add key words from the job descriptions into your resume to better tailor your resume for a particular position (assuming you've held those responsibilities).

I can't think of anything that you should avoid when applying, except making sure you have no typo's or grammatical errors and keeping your resume to two pages or under. I would also advise that you use bullet points in your resume vs paragraph format.

I hope this helps, please feel free to reach out again if you have any further questions!

Thank you,
Sasha

Hi Tim,

Thank you for your service. To answer your question, because Deloitte prides itself on hiring people with diverse backgrounds, I'm not sure if diminishing variety on your resume is as valuable as highlighting the experiences where you believe you had the most impact and feel could best demonstrate how this result could translate into a consulting job. I would focus your resume on actionable, measurable results that you directly contributed to. I would be happy to take a look if you'd like!

Best,

Andrea Butler

Sasha, thank you for your response. As a follow up.... so I want to seek employment with Deloitte. I'm not in the window for any current job listings, but from reading the other posts and what I've been told it's never a bad idea to submit your resume to the HR departments at organizations you would like to seek. There are several broad areas (from previous post) that I feel I bring value to. In this case should I submit a general resume... jack of all trade type format, then resubmit a targeted resume when I get closer and a specific opportunity opens up? Sorry for the lengthy follow up, I just really do not want to adversely affect my chances.
