Deloitte Impact Day: Balancing future decisions against current needs.

Veteran

Good Morning,

I would like to thank you all for taking your time to assist Veterans with their goals and answer their questions as well today.

I currently have a little over a year before I hit 20 years of service (eligible to retire if I wish at that point) and I am in the decision stage as to whether I will continue to serve until I am no longer allowed or if I will pursue a new beginning at 20.

I currently hold a BSBA with a concentration in HRM and have begun the path to a Masters in Organizational Leadership. My goal is to become a consultant with one of the major firms (along with many people posting to you today). I have a quick mind and an uncanny ability to read people which has allowed me to garner much in my lifetime. My skills lie in General Management, Leadership, Sales, Marketing, Process Improvement, Networking, Logistics, Recruiting, Human Capital and Employee Relations/Retention.

How far in advance would someone be able to apply for a position with a company such as Deloitte? Do you keep a pool of qualified applicants for future recruiting efforts? I know that most companies are looking for an immediate hire or as close to that as possible so therein lies one of the larger issues facing transitioning Veterans.

Again, thank you for your time and for sharing your knowledge and ideas.

Hi Victor,

Thanks for reaching out, and thank you for your service. It's never too early to start networking with firms and mentors for post-retirement opportunities. You could begin by expanding your network now and building a pipeline for future opportunities.

Many firms (Deloitte included) hold veteran and military focused recruiting and networking events to assist service men and women with their transition into civilian careers. You could also look into these types of events as opportunities to further expand your network. These are generally advertised on social media channels and at local event venues.

I hope this helps, and please feel free to reach back out if you have further questions.

Thank you!
Sasha

Sasha and Kyle,

I appreciate the responses to my question and agree that networking is key in the coming years for me. I have seen the Deloitte recruiting events posted on LI and a couple of other locations. Consulting for me is a goal and seems to be something that I was born to do. I love the challenge of looking from the outside in and providing guidance, assistance and positive change for a company from any aspect that I possess knowledge in. My next step will be to keep an eye out for those events and get myself in there while working on building my network.

I would really like to pick your brain on a few things. Please let me know if you are ok with being contacted privately and again thank you for the guidance.

Hi Victor,

Thank YOU for your continued service of our country!

In terms of when is it appropriate to start reaching out, I would say it's never too early to start networking. Many recruiters and other practitioners would be more than happy to engage with you in advance of your retirement. I recommend being open and honest about your time frame up front, but otherwise establishing relationships in advance is only going to help you when you decide to transition to a the private sector.
