I am a transitioning veteran interested in Government, Public Policy, International Relations with perhaps the long term goal of pursuing my law degree. I am looking for advice on how to go about getting into this area and would love to talk to an attorney to get their perspective.

I currently intern for Senator Bob Corker (R-Tenn) out of Chattanooga. I have been accepted to William & Mary College for the Fall '17 as an undergrad transfer student. There are so many sub-categories within law, quite honestly I don't even know where to start. Whether its litigation, arbitration, constitutional law, criminal law, contractual law and ect. I am trying to decide what to major in and what would be the most marketable degree in conjunction with a law degree as well. I know it is between Public Policy, International Relations and Government (Poli-Sci). I've traveled to 14 countries on 3 different continents during my service working at US Embassies. My passion and professional interests lie in foreign affairs, politics and national policy. Any words of wisdom, guidance and advice would be greatly appreciated.

relax and enjoy your classes and time at W&M -- take a broad base of history, poli sci, philosophy, psychology, and science classes to round out your broad base of travel and experience

the best lawyers are prepared to interrelate other areas into their cases -- as you will not only make arguments, but must be able to have insight to personal behavior

Good luck and despite what you may feel -- it will all work out
people and opportunities will find you if you are passionate about your work and thought

Cory, I think an interesting area of law for you to look into would be privacy/cyber law. I can put you in touch with one of the lawyers working here at Deloitte in that area if you are interested. Let me know. I'm on linkedin

I was a transfer student at William & Mary (many moons ago) and LOVED it. You would probably do this anyway, but allow me to emphasize the importance of trying out campus organizations. See here http://www.wm.edu/campuslife/clubs-orgs.php

Specialties within law -- forget about that for awhile. Set up one-on-one meetings with professors in each of the disciplines on your list. In the time remaining before you get to W&M, try to read one book (even a memoir or fiction) about each area, and see what passions are ignited. Full steam ahead!

Hi Corey,
This is good that you know your area of interests so you have someplace to start. In school, I invite you to consider taking classes in the field you are interested as soon as you can so you know if you really like them and also good at them.

Hope this helps
Regards,
Işılay
