Assistance in Updating Resume - Relocating to California in Summer 2018

Veteran

Jasmine Lopez Upper Marlboro, MD

Hi ACP Team,

I am looking to update my resume. I've recently applied for a volunteer position at my job. One of the requirement was not to submit a resume but to submit a cover letter detailing your qualifications. My cover letter was good, I believe. I got the volunteer position, but I realized that my resume did not convey the same passion as my cover letter. I also realized that none of my experience from my current job I used in my cover letter.

Late last year I paid for someone to help with my resume but all he did was simply reword my original resume. He wrote an excellent objective but that was all.

I feel like if I can talk to someone and tell them about each job then I can get it on paper.

Just to add a bit more - I do not have a degree so for me it's important that my resume say as much as possible, if that is possible. I'm also working on getting my Certified Administrative Professional Certification and later in the year getting my certification as a Certified Associate in Project Management.

I'm doing all this in preparation for a move to California during the summer of 2018. I'll be moving to the Inland Empire.

Hi Jasmine,

Thank you for the question! I would encourage you to take a look at ACP AdvisorNet's Community page. You can use it to search for Advisors and build a one-on-one dialogue about how to refine your resume and build your knowledge of the Project Management field. There are several Advisors on ACP AdvisorNet that could speak to the industry at large, as well as Advisors in California itself - and both their location and their career field are searchable!

In addition you can get good advice on how to tailor your resume from someone with Human Resource Management experience. There are quite a few Advisors on ACP AdvisorNet that specialize in this, so feel free to reach out to them directly on the Community page as well.
