I have an idea and would like to get a patent for it. How would I go about doing this?

Over the past few months I have been having some issues and I finally came up with an idea to solve it. My goal is to patent the idea and seek mentorship on how to bring this idea to life. What necessary steps do I need to take to accomplish this? Please feel free to provide any advice. Thank you.

Hi Robin, congratulations on your idea and my advice for you to consider is to make sure that you do everything possible to protect yourself and your idea before the patent is granted. Never underestimate the potential for someone to steal your idea , directly or indirectly before the patent is granted. To that end, I suggest:
1) be really careful who you disclose information to and only do so on a true " need to know" basis. The less people that know--anything--the better.
2) if you do need to disclose your idea after carefully considering the audience, get a " Non Disclosure and Intellectual Property" agreement signed first. This is a simple document that provides you some recourse if you wind up in litigation.
Thank you for your service and GOOD LUCK to you!
Best Regards, Mike

Hi Robin

John is right that doing more investigation from a business perspective is a good first step. Also, get your idea in as rough a form as you like into the hands of the people who will pay for it - their feedback is invaluable at this stage.

Patents can take many years so when you have the core idea refined, being the 'first to file' is an advantage. For my patent I used this service. It was extremely straightforward & relatively inexpensive

Here is a guide on how to patent.

Patents are filed electronically today through the US Patent office web site.

Having an idea and a patent are probably not the first steps you want to take. Construct a business plan as your first step.

Answer basic questions like, how much capital do you need to get started ? How long will it be until your cash flow exceeds your expenses ?
