Needing a Career as a Heavy Equipment Operator in NJ

Veteran

Timothy Henderson Absecon, NJ

I'm a Certified Heavy Equipment Operator, in the use of Bull Dozer, Excavator, Mini, Backhoe and Front End Loader. Using this equipment, I have been trained and am proficient at Grading, Ditching, Benching and Sloping.

I’m a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) Card Holder and OSHA Certified.

I have less than 1 year experience and can't seem to get my foot in the door for an interview/dig test. I'm very motivated and hard working. I have my resume on 7 different job sites, have attempted to work with our local Career One Stop and followed-up, with no success, on the "job opportunities" given by the school I received my certification from.

You might want to visit your local New Jersey Career Connections. Call and make an appointment with a veteran representative and get hooked up with them. Also, when looking online try and find jobs that in the application form ask for "protected veteran". This means they need to hire veterans to meet a federal hiring program if the company does over $100,000 a year with the feds. Also, look at State, County, City or Village positions. Just like USAJOBS, most of the local governments offer a benefit for veteran employment. The great thing about government employment 1) most offer a pension and 2) many offer some form of healthcare in retirement. The civilian population has pulled away from both of those. Hope this helps, thanks for your service and God Bless.

Thanks so much Mike, I appreciate the insight and will reach out to NJ, NY and PA Senators.

John, I googled what you suggested and I didn't see any job postings pertaining to the wall; however, I did find a very large Employer for Heavy Equipment Operators and applied to several jobs.

Thank you again Mike and John!!

Hi Tim--going to suggest an unusual route, contact the Governors and US Senators from both NJ and NY and introduce yourself as a veteran needing assistance getting a contact who can get you the test you need and to get on any needed list. You can find the e mails for Senators Cory Booker and Robert Menendez ( NJ) , Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand ( NY) as well as Governors Chris Christie ( NJ) and Andy Cuomo (NY) on line at the government websites or a simple search. A simple e mail that reflects the sincerity of your message here to ACP and that all you are asking for is a chance to meet the right person. If that does not work, keep working down the ladder to local officials. GOOD LUCK to you! Best Regards, Mike
