Job Shadowing Opportunities

Veteran

Robin Ferguson

As a service member connecting and networking with the civilian world is a challenging endeavor. I have started a journey to connect with people outside my circle of familiarity to explore different perspectives on unknown opportunities. At first, I thought this would be a very difficult task given my 10 years of experience is solely military; however, with a platform like ACP this journey came to reality. The features that ACP provides make it easy to connect and network with professionals in several different industries. To give some context, I am heavily involved in pursuing opportunities within the cyber security space and looking for different opportunities (i.e job shadowing, handons training etc..) to better see what align with my skills. My goal is to offer my time to assist organizations to hone my skills and gain more experience. Most importantly, my remaining 2 years of contracted service does not hinder my efforts to purposefully and objectively network with the civilian world. Ultimately, I would love the chance to get to speak with anyone. Please let me know if this is possible! Thank you and looking forward connecting.

Robin -
Your idea about getting experience over the next two years is a good one. Here's something to think about - if two years from now I was reading your resume and saw some job shadowing that would be good, but what would be much much better is to see that you actually utilized your skills by, for example, helping a non-profit (community organization, church, etc) install a secure network at their facility and helped them implement its usage. Now that would say to me, as your resume reader, that you had initiative, confidence, compassion, and experience. See what I'm saying?? In other words you have enough skill now to get a job so you need to do something that shows you're a valuable as you appear to be. Best of luck.

Hi Robin,
You might consider something a bit different than shadowing. How about volunteering? There are quite a few organizations where you can learn and practice while helping a nonprofit organization. Here are two off the top of my head:
TechSoup.org
NPtechForGood.com
I'll check around for others.
