Disabled Veterans Status for a Small Business Grants

Veteran

william grimes San Antonio, TX

Greetings - I'd like to link-up with someone who has been successful in obtaining grants for equipment purchases, etc.

I have a Veteran Owned Small Business (garagerenewtexas.com) resurfacing garage floors. I formed it as a LLC and business is starting to pick up. I need to purchase the equipment I've been renting. Any help/advice is appreciated.

Relevant facts: (1) 60% disabled veteran ownership, (2) formed as an LLC, (3) completed a comprehensive business plan, (3) I have a DUNS number, (4) I have not filed for service-disabled-veteran-owned-businesses - the paperwork is overwhelming!

Thanks

Dear COL Grimes,

First of all, thank you for your service to our country. The truth is, there are a great many grants out there, state and federal, to assist veterans in starting and running a small business. Two places you might go for advice on this is SCORE--an organization made up of retired executives who successfully run businesses--and the SBA, the Small Business Administration.

Many states have funds set aside for business empowerment and growth and are a source of funding to launch a small business, and especially those with minority or veteran status. I cannot speak for Texas--but knowing the success of the state in creating jobs I would say they are probably ahead of the curve than Oregon--Oregon has a state organization called Business Oregon which provides non-dilutive grants, small business loans, business stipends for employee acquisition and training and workforce-focused employee training workshops. I would contact the State of Texas government and inquire about these small business focused grants and loans.

The US government also has small business focused grants and I would go into grants.gov website to explore what they are.

I wish you much success in building your business.

Hello Mike,

Thank you for your service! A good resource for continuing to grow your business would be SCORE, which has numerous resources and articles on the topic. The VA also has a site for small business owners to find helpful resources, as does EBV (links can found below).

Finally, consider taking a look at our Community page. It is a searchable tool for finding Advisors in your area, where you can specify experience in owning, operating, or assisting small businesses. From there, we invite you to message them and start a one-on-one discussion about your business questions. You can message as many Advisors as you'd like!
