Moving to a New State - Need Some Helpful Resources

Veteran

Jasmine Lopez Upper Marlboro, MD

Hello Everyone,

My husband and I have decided to move to California in the Summer of 2018. This is when our oldest will be heading to Middle School. I would like some guidance on how to prepare for this in terms of finding a job. How to tell employers that I plan to relocate and not have them fearing that they'll have to pay for my relocating expenses. In addition, while I know that this site is mainly for job any help on how to prepare to sell my current house and whatever steps i need to take would be helpful.

I currently live in MD and the area I plan to move to in California is considered the Inland Empire. My husband and I are open to moving to another part of California, unfortunately I'm only familiar with the Inland Empire.

Hi Jasmine,

When looking for your new role in California, it may be helpful to disclose, both in a cover letter or your Summary on your resume, that you plan on moving to California and can/will cover relocation expenses on your own.

Having been in Talent Acquisition for 8 years, there were many times that I worked on filling roles, that didn't have the budget or capacity to relocate candidates. Therefore many applicants who may have applied from out of state, ended up declining the job. I've also had some former colleagues, from previous staffing companies I have worked at, ignore resumes of those that lived out of state for a job; This was because the role they worked on didn't have a relocation budget, so they only focused on local candidates.

By putting it on your cover letter or resume, It adds to your marketability and recruiters can then focus more on your skill-set than the worry of relocation expenses.

I hope this helps.

Whatever you make now, you will need 25% more income to maintain your standard of living.

Also, whats not talked alot about is the price of groceries. With all that sunshine, you would think prices would be more reasonable, but not so.

For example a pound of butter is $7.85 at Albertsons. Same pound of butter in another state is $4.85.

Average apartment rent is $2,500. Median home price is $685,000.

You need smog test to import your vehicle to California. better to sell your cars and buy California-certified cars when you get there.

I tried this move back in 2000 and I regretted it. I doubled my salary to $165k then and thought that would make up the difference but felt like I took a step-down in living standard due to all the costs you don't think about.

I found the culture to be counter-intuitive, especially if you have children. Many people shunned us because they had no children. They also don't mind cutting in front of you in line with no thought about it. Very rude people there.

I ran across this article last week on AdvisorNet. It is on "Permanent Change of Station: Saving Money When It’s Your Time to Move." I hope it can help!

CoorsTEK has two Manufacturing plants in California, Vista and Ventura. You're a little far out to apply just yet, but you may want to familiarize yourself with the page, and the different jobs that we post for those locations.

John,

Thank you for the link. Based on the link you provided me it seems i'll be okay. However things like smog test and selling my car weren't things i considered. So I appreciate you bringing that to my attention. We don't plan to move to silicon valley or anywhere in that general facility. We will be in San Bernardino County where the cost of living is more affordable. The one thing we are realizing is that we may have to commute. Which is an added expense. In MD we have the convenience of the metro.
