How can I secure a staff position on Capitol Hiil?

Veteran

Kevin Miller Fort Benning, GA

I'm an Army Ranger looking to transition to a staff position on Capitol Hill. I was wondering if anyone in the ACP community has had experience on Capitol Hill, or if anyone has recommendations that might help me secure a position on The Hill. Thanks in advance for your responses.

Cheers,
Kevin

Try Tour of Duty first while you're still serving . Search for it on google or AKO as well. I haven't had much experience directly with it, but I understand there are broadening assignments that are available but you have to apply for. Some of them include staff positions in DC. If you can get one, it may give you the direct connections to the roles that you want to apply for while keeping the stability of the military pay to start.

Check out www.hillvets.org, specifically the HillVets House Fellowship. I met some of the leadership at HillVets at an event a few weeks ago and it seems like an incredible program.

Foremost, thank you for your service. Having lived / interned in D.C. early-on, I know one of the best ways to seek opportunities - in addition to networking - is to speak with your Congressional reps in both the House and Senate. If not them directly, then their office staff, who regularly interact with constituents, and understand (for the most part) how to 'work the Hill.' Obviously we're in a holiday and lame duck phase ... but at a minimum, see if you can get on their calendars for mid/late January. And be explicit about what you're seeking: both specific roles where your skills could be leveraged, as well as organizations that are specifically set up to facilitate ex military opportunities. Best wishes!

Hi Kevin,

In the DMV area is all about the connection. First start networking in the area to get to know people in fields. I have been in DC for over 20 years and know a lot of people from all walks of life and from different area of the country and I find that people around here will give you a leg up and will connect you with specific field that you want.

Hi Kevin,

Thank you very much for your service and for using ACP AdvisorNet. Have you taken a look at our Community section? It's a very unique feature of the site and can be a great way to network with those in your field.

On that portion of the site you're able to search for Advisors by geographic location, employer and industry and reach out via private message for guidance. I did a quick search for Advisors experienced in government and located in Washington, DC and found a few great options. One Advisor that you may want to reach out to is Rachel Goldberg (https://acp-advisornet.org/community/6f2sn5/Rachel-Goldberg).

I hope you find this helpful. If you'd like a tour of the site, please feel free to send me a private message and I would be happy to schedule one with you.

Thank you again for using ACP AdvisorNet!

Best,
Kathleen
