Job searching

Veteran

Thomas Nguyen Lake In The Hills, IL

My name is Thomas Nguyen. I am a veteran. I have a bachelor in computer information system and a MBA graduate certificate in Strategic leadership. However, i couldn't find any jobs after college. Right now i am working in manufacturing as a QA inspector. I've been searching for many jobs both private sector and government without any success. I 'm traing myself some software development skills, so hopefully i can market myself better in the future. I am thinking about going back to school to becime a teacher, but i'm not sure at this point. I need help and advise to be able to start a career in the near future. Thank you.

Hi Thomas, As usual, you've received sound advice. I would be glad to look at your resume if you send me a copy (steffeslaw@frontier.com). Regardless of your background, you usually need a strong, well constructed resume to get someone to consider you for an interview. While some jobs and industries pay more than others, I suggest your keep an open mind to all openings as you pursue a new career. Just because you start with a less than optimum position doesn't mean you can't move to a different position (in the same company) more suited to your interests and skills. The key is getting your foot into the door at a company (or in an industry) that interests you.

Your technical credentials seem sound. When that is the case, your difficulties may be in how you are marketing yourself including your resume and interviewing skills. See if you can find a career center that will help you polish both. Good luck.

My IT training was in software programming; i don't know much about networking, so i don't know if Comcast is willing to train me if i apply for the position. Please give me your advice. I appreciate your help. Thank you.

Some suggestions: Go to Motorola nearby you. Use your QA experience to QA at Asian based OEM's that supplies Motorola. Good income on this job....International travel...your the guy that makes sure they do not get a container full of junk. Avoid teaching....no tenure....they make you apply for your job every year. Apply to Comcast...you are in one of their largest profit centers..while they have a network delivery systems that gets beat up in the Windy City...their real challenge is network traffic overload. Your IT education may get you in the door. Comcast has a program to hire vets. Contact me for more info.
