I am seeking information about training in cybersecurity. I served 10/1976 to 10/1979 I now am disabled but getting better, I will always be disabled. Is it possible to do from home? Are there centers I should check with? Does anyone Have a referal?

Hello Robert,
I wanted to recommend a good online program for you to consider. Western Governors University provides a competency based learning platform to complete a degree in IT-Security online with a few visits to testing centers. Many of the tests result in a CompTIA or CISCO certification. http://www.wgu.edu/online_it_degrees/information_technology_degree_security

I used to work at WGU as a faculty member (Student Mentor) and I think it's a great program for IT programs.

Best of luck!

Dear Bob,

Congratulations on getting better and starting over! It sounds like you have chosen a field to pursue: cyber security. You may have heard the saying "looking for a (full-time) job is a (full-time) job." It means there is no end to the research, networking, calling or letter-writing, etc. you can do in the job search. You will also need a resume, cover letter, etc. Happily, so much of this can be found online. Get yourself a notebook so you can track calls you've made, info you've gathered, applications you've put in, appointments, etc. Start with research! Google cyber security companies in your area. Other companies may use internal resources for their cyber security; you could Google all companies or organizations in your area (see what I mean? no end to the research!) Always explore the whole Web site, including the job openings page and read the job description and qualifications, etc. Give yourself a list of three things to do each day to make progress with your search. For example: work on resume, research a company, call a friend or relation and explain your career aspiration, to start networking. It's best if you're organized about a job search and have a feeling of accomplishment each day!! Best Wishes!!

Robert,

Start looking at things like HackerOne.com, which has advice on hacker training for bug bounties. In addition, look at things like coursera.org which has loads of free online computer classes.

The good news is that there is huge need in the cybersecurity industry. You did not present any previous computer science qualifications in your post, so I don't know if you're asking to improve preexisting computer programming skills or starting totally fresh.

Either way, start on those sites, do a course or two and begin to reach out to staffing companies and recruiters in your area, in addition to reaching out to any cybersecurity firms (find references on Virus Bulletin, for example. I am quite sure many of them will have veterans programs.

Good luck.
