I am a veteran with BA in Business Administration. I am struggling to find a career/job in this field. What can I do to get into the Federal Government?

I am a RYT 200 hour. I love teaching yoga but I only teach four hours a week and that is not enough to live on. I've considered starting a yoga studio but I don't know where to start.

Hi Bridgette,
Thank you for your service!
Aside from teaching at various yoga studios around your area, I've got a cool idea. A few years back I became a teacher in my area of expertise, at a few local community centers/rec centers. It pays fairly well on its own, especially if you can teach at a few. What's key for me is, without any self-promotion on my part, my students learn what I'm all about and trust me. You could eventually rent out your own studio once you build up a client base. I've learned over the years to grow slowly. Having your own dba/simple website/business cards/even blog will help create a brand identity for you.

Hope that helps!

Take a look at the VA. But you will need to focus on your skills. The VA In many states are helping veterans through the process, you still need to use key word writing in the application and resume.. Network!

Hi Bridgette -

I think one of the first things you need to do is narrow down your specific goal and mission. In the opening you state you would like to work in the Federal Government, but then state you want to possibly open a yoga studio. I think it is important for you to really become mission focused on what path you wish to choose - even if it is both. You could say "I want to get a job in the Federal Government and start a small yoga studio on the weekends." That is cool - as long as you are very specific.

In terms of a Federal Government position, I think you also need to get specific as to what you are passionate about and wish to pursue in your journey through life. It is great to just explore and see what is out there, but you might want to take some time to think about what really makes you happy and excited. Is it a position in law enforcement? Air Traffic Control? The environment? Where do you want to live? The city, country, mountains, the beach? Are you willing to relocate? Do you mind traveling a lot or want to travel a little?

I guess my suggestion is that you design your life - then decide what career would allow you to pursue the life you design.

Bridgette,
The website www.usajobs.gov is a terrific site to visit if you are interested in a Federal Government position. You can search by location and job. You may also want to use your military connect to find civilian positions at military establishments. There are many. Most divisions of Federal Departments have a finance section. State government jobs are about the same as federal jobs so give your state's civil service commission'so wesite a look. Living in Virigina you are at the hotbed of these jobs. Also try Stragetic Resources Incorporated at www.sri.com
Stay Positive it takes time.
Regards,
Jim
