I can't seem to get hired anywhere around Pagosa Springs, Colorado. I would like to find out why.

I moved here to work for United Rentals, but got laid off after 7 months with no explanation.

I would suggest contacting your local Veteran's Service Representative through the State's Workforce program. They can assist you with finding out why you aren't getting the job offers as well as help you contact employers who are hiring; particularly employers who are hiring vets. They do a lot of marketing to assist veterans with jobs. It looks like the closest office to you is in Durango.

Scott,
Layoffs happen for many reasons. Do claim your unemployment benefits since you crossed the six month minimum for unemployment. I have had 35 contracts, most ended when the work was finished.
Some jobs are seasonal. Where Pagosa Springs is located could be considered seasonal work if contractors are not renting during the winter. It seems you were working on heavy rental equipment that may not have been needed during the winter; or the equipment was more new equipment rather than old stuff needing repairs. Either way I suggest making a fifty mile circle around where you are living now and begin a job search aimed at your best credentials on your resume. Also look up what firms are competitors of United Rental and see what they have open for new work. I worked one contract 107 miles from home, so I know driving to a far job can work (That employer called me back four time over 11 years, I finally moved to 45 miles from that place of work and was laid off three months later – go figure that out).
Your first statement on this site says you are looking for work "Consulting"; that statement really needs some more definition so you can guide the hiring people to direct your resume into the right slots. I am often called a consulting designer - which is a Structural Designer on contract. Without the "structural designer" in there I would not get a call for any work. So please state the type of Consultant you want to be.

Pagosa Springs as you know by living there is a small and tourist job market. You should move to Denver.
It is booming with urban in-fill. Construction jobs in Denver are plentiful and last for years. Denver has a large VA hospital and always looking for CNA's. If you got to stay in Pagosa try the commute to Alamosa and Durango. Apply to the State Colleges there. They may need your experience in health or construction.

Scott,
Are you getting interviews? If so then your resume is doing it's job but if you have sent out a lot of resumes and are not getting any response, then your resume needs to be updated. If you are getting interviews but not any employment offers, then your interviewing skills need to be sharpened. If you would like help with either, I am prior service, former TAP instructor and was also in Veterans Services (veteran employment) for several years and would be glad to help, just get-in-touch with me.
