Looking for assistance or pointers with my resume.

Veteran

Jonathon Ross Watertown, NY

I am rapidly approaching my ETS date. I have been through the Soldier For Life Transition Program where we constructed a resume. It does not feel like the resume that I created meets the standards necessary to get to an interview. It was very difficult for me to put my experience onto 1-2 pages. I am looking at moving into Project Management or Operations Management.

I have been in the Army for 12 years (13 in February). I am a 68W, Healthcare Specialist. I have held jobs as a line medic, Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant, First Sergeant, Jumpmaster Instructor, Clinic NCOIC, and Operations Sergeant.

Any help that anyone would be willing to offer is very much appreciated.

Thank you in advance,

Jonathon

Hi Jonathon-

I am retired after a 40 year career in industry where I hired over 100 people. Now I am helping veterans like yourself by helping with their resumes. If you would e-mail me your resume (drjamesfwatson@gmail.com) I would be happy to comment on it. I also recommend the book "Tired of Eating Peanut and Butter Sandwiches? - Tips to Get a Job Fast" available on Amazon. It contains practical advice. Good luck in your search!!

Jonathon,
Thank you for your service. The thing that I would emphasizes is to work with someone who is prior service. We will be able to understand and help you communicate your military experience better than someone that has not worn the uniform. Also know that employers in today's employment market are looking for veterans because of our training among several other things that the military taught us. There is a lot of information out there and at times can be over whelming. If you would like any help I was with Veteran's Services for several years and focused on helping Veterans with employment. So feel free to get-in-touch with me.

Thank you for your military career!

On your resume, I echo EMPHASIZING accomplishments: use aggrandizing verbs, not just past tenses of what you did. GREW this; MULTIPLIED that; ACHIEVED higher numbers (include the numbers); etc.

Good luck!

Limit any military jargon as much as possible. Unless the person who's reviewing the resume has any military experience, they may not have a clue as to what you're talking about. And even if they do, if their experience isn't similar to yours, they may not know either!

Your resume should focus on your accomplishments and impact, not just your responsibilities in your various positions. You can create a generic resume but should tailor it to each position by showcasing the accomplishments that map back to the job requirements. I'm happy to send you some samples and review your resume. I've worked as a career management consultant and have done this for hundreds of people.

I am not a trained professional; but I have practical experience.
