Position Description

This is a fully benefited, full-time Harvard University position that has been funded through June 30, 2026. There is the possibility of renewal, contingent on funding, university priorities and satisfactory job performance.

Reporting to the Managing Director of Academic Technology, the Software Engineering Manager is a member of a high-performing team that focuses on the development and implementation of a world-class online learning platform. This is an ideal opportunity to work at the intersection of online education and technical innovation, and in an organization that values creativity, collaboration and diverse perspectives and backgrounds.

The Manager supervises a team of software and DevOps engineers responsible for developing, enhancing, and maintaining multiple large components of the LXP platform. They will assume a leadership role, in collaboration with the team, other HUIT departments, and representatives from the university's schools and departments in designing world-class and modern solutions. They will serve as a leader in the department in developing industry-class software development practices and workflows and will be a core contributor to the development of a culture of collaboration and openness within Harvard and beyond.

The Manager will serve as a mentor and coach to all engineers in the department and will help identify, coordinate, and lead skills and professional engineering activities with the objective of building organizational capacity and developing people. In collaboration with peer managers, they will help determine the composition of project teams and allocate resources to support the requirements of a complex and dynamic portfolio.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

• Responsible for effective staff management, including hiring and orientation, training and development, workflow and performance management, and the promotion of an inclusive and innovative work environment
• Participate fully in software development life cycle
• Lead development of technical solutions to deliver business requirements
• Ensure development efforts meet University accessibility guidelines
• Establish and lead CI/CD and BC/DR efforts according to industry best practices
• Participate in long-term strategic planning for the application portfolio(s)
• Establish and maintain internal/external stakeholder relationships
• Ensure appropriate levels of redundancy and documentation exist for all systems
• Ensure development efforts meet best practices in security, privacy, performance, and compliance
• Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies, and Code of Conduct
• Other duties as needed or required

Basic Qualifications

•Minimum of seven years' post-secondary education or relevant work experience
•Supervisory experience

• Undergraduate degree or equivalent education and experience
• Experience in release/change management for enterprise-class applications
• Experience managing a software development team
• Minimum of seven years progressive experience in technical/software development project management
• Expert knowledge in one or more of the following software development frameworks or languages: Java, Ruby on Rails, Python, JavaScript, Angular, NodeJS, React.
• Strong knowledge of server and storage architectures, as well as cloud-based solutions; including authentication, authorization, account provisioning, identity management, and directory services, and proven experience designing systems that integrate with / incorporate these services.
• Proven ability to capture, understand, document, and convey complex business needs and processes, translate them into functional requirements and system specifications, and develop a supporting technical solution at an abstract level, and detailed technical specifications (including choice of implementation technologies).
• Experienced with Agile methodologies, processes and tools, and proven experience integrating agile methods into a department.
• Understanding and experience developing to WCAG 2.2 guidelines
Working Conditions
