Position Description

Financial Administration (FAD) is dedicated to advancing Harvard University's teaching and research mission by stewarding its resources; providing support, guidance, and consultation; ensuring compliance with University and federal guidelines; mitigating risk; pursuing operational excellence; and promoting the financial health of the University.

The Financial Analyst role is part of the Investment Accounting Team within the Office of the Controller. The Financial Analyst is responsible for supporting investment accounting for the University from preparing, posting, and reporting out the investment unit work papers, as well as preparing the contributions (pledges) receivable and special investments accounting, preparing accurate annual reporting on University pledged contributions, preparing key components and footnotes for the annual financial statements, and supporting the annual and interim audit.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  •    Responsible for the monthly unit work papers, journal entries and reports
  •    Responsible for the monthly special investment accounting entries
  •    Coordinate monthly with Harvard's investment management company (HMC) on entries and work papers
  •    Prepare the general investment account (GIA) roll forward
  •    Perform account reconciliations, post audit reviews, and researches and resolves any issues with those reviews and reconciliations
  •    Prepare and post other investment entries relating to the general investment account and the investment components of the general operating account
  •    Responsible for ensuring general ledger balance reconciliations are supported by sufficient work paper support and are appropriate and accurate
  •    Responsible for quarterly pledge accounting journal entries and reporting
  •    Perform review of accounting treatment for significant gifts and pledges contributed to the University
  •    Synthesize accurate and timely annual reporting on University pledged contributions
  •    Prepares key components of the University annual financial statements and related footnotes which are used by the University's rating agencies, bondholders, alumni, etc.
  •    Utilizes Oracle financial systems, ad hoc querying tools, and other financial software to assist in required reporting and analysis requests both internally and externally
  •    Completes special projects as directed by the Office of the Controller
  •    Other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications

  •    Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required
  •    Minimum of 3 years' relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  •    Ability to:
              *  successfully manage multiple projects on deadline.
              *  work independently and in a team environment.
  •    Experience in:
              *  desktop computing systems such as Microsoft Office, including spreadsheets, word-processing and databases.
              *  a not-for-profit environment preferred.
              *  utilizing Oracle financial systems a plus.
  •    Excellent:
              *  oral and written communications.
              *  accounting, organizational, and analytical skills.
  •    Knowledge/understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).

Working Conditions

This position will be based in Cambridge, MA. FAD supports hybrid workplace models where business and team needs allow.
