The person in this position assists with managing employees in the maintenance of the locomotive fleet. He or she ensures that all G&W safety rules and practices for Mechanical Department employees are followed explicitly. This person manages the maintenance and repair of locomotives and railcars so that they meet FRA standards while reducing life-cycle costs and increasing reliability and availability.
•Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety and operations and with Federal Railroad Administration standards
•Assist in maintaining employee safety records regarding scheduled safety-rule presentations, job briefings, and safety films; prepare schedules for these events
•Assist in the work process to maintain locomotive periodic-maintenance schedule and advise Transportation when locomotives must be directed to the shop
•Monitor locomotive dwell time to maximize locomotive availability
•Assign and monitor progress of work in the shop to ensure directives to employees are being adhered to
•Assists in the maintenance of locomotive files to comply with FRA periodic-inspection rules and G&W rules for record retention
•Carry out and assist with decisions concerning correct repair-and-maintenance practices for locomotives
•Assist locomotive employees as necessary to troubleshoot technical malfunctions or equipment
•Assist with other projects and perform other duties as assigned
REQUIRED SKILLS AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
•Five years of Mechanical experience on heavy equipment, preferably locomotives. Both Mechanical and electrical experience preferred; diesel engines.
•Knowledge of the safe handling and disposal of hazardous and nonhazardous waste products
•Good skills in Microsoft Word and Excel
•Knowledge of FRA regulations pertaining to locomotives
•Ability to train, manage, and supervise hourly employees
•Ability to understand oral or written instructions and execute them to achieve desired results
•Ability to maintain good working relationships with other department heads and supervisors
If candidate is from out of the area, it is expected that he/she would relocate.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR CREDENTIALS:
•At least eighteen years of age
•Valid driver’s license
•Associate degree or technical degree in a related field
•Five or more years of supervisory experience maintaining locomotives preferred
