About Erica

Hello, my name is Erica Johnson a retired Air Force veteran of over 24 honorable years. My last assignment was a special duty at Baylor University AFROTC Detachment 810 in Waco, TX as the Detachment NCOIC. I was the personnel NCO there and absolutely loved working with the students. After I retired I was able to gain employment with Baylor in the detachment as an Administrative Associate for three years while I completed my undergraduate degree in Applied Science. Although I was able to take a few Human Resource courses, the college I attended did not offer a major for HR at the time.
In 2014 I joined the HR department on campus but have not been able to move up from the HR Associate role. It is a small department and the only role that has an increase in manpower requires experience, which I do not have, so hires are made outside of the department. I was told by the Chief, HR Officer a couple of years ago that my the role does not guarantee any upward mobility. Now I find myself working as a temporary employee with the Student Financial Aid office with no concrete future with the university. My time is scheduled to end by 8/31/20 and for the first time in my life, I have no idea where I will be working.
I am working on attaining my Master's Degree in Management, one class at a time, as working and classes at this level is a little more challenging costly. My GI Bill will be exhausted by the end of this fall so employment for me is critical. I have applied to many positions both with the university and with the government and have had no luck. I think that despite all my experience in the Air Force and the small amount with the university's HR department seems to not afford me a favorable outcome.
I am hoping guidance from AdvisorNet can help get me on a successful path toward a rewarding next career.
