About Mary
I am a journalism professor at the University of Texas at Austin with more than 20 years' experience in the news business -- primarily in TV news. I left broadcasting for a PhD at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania in 2003. I teach journalism and I do research with the goal of helping photojournalists do their jobs better. I think of myself as a hybrid -- doing theory-based research, but with my feet on the ground of experience. Many of the photographers I worked with in TV are veterans, and the few vets I've had in classes since getting my PhD are terrific students.
Mary has volunteered to be available for private messages. Feel free to send a conversational message but remember to be succinct and mindful of the other person’s time.
