Seeking a career in human resources
I'm a retired E-6. During my 20-year career, I was an Aircraft Maintenance Technician in addition to other duties. Around the 15-year mark, I focused on preparing for separation. I bought a business suit every quarter and started on an Associates degree. When I retired I had my Associates and Bachelor's degrees in Human Resources Management and minor in Business Law, along with an entire wardrobe to match my new career.
10-months from retirement, I searched for internships and was hired as an HR Intern 6-months out, through the DoD Skillbridge Program. After retirement, I was hired by a different company as a Payroll Specialist; followed by a new role at a new company as an HR Coordinator. Within a short time, hired for my current role by another company as an HR Generalist. Also, I am currently pursuing an Executive MBA in Leadership Development.
ADVICE: You will most likely have to jump from job to job until you get where you feel most productive. One thing I've constantly heard, "Gotta have a job to get a job". This has come to be a fact of the civilian lifestyle. It was very hard landing that first job, but after I did, it was easy to get hired by new employers afterwards. Stay focused on the military core values, keep that military drive, and success will follow.
