What Is The Right Job?

Career Exploration

Only in the right job does anyone succeed over the long term. In the wrong job, we fail and become discouraged. I have been interviewing, placing and hiring people in manufacturing for 29 years. Here are some of the observations I have gleaned about jobs, work and success from the people who succeeded or failed working for me.

1.) The right job is a job that you know how to do and like, but is enough of a challenge that you get to learn new things and develop new skills.

2.) The right job is one where you can go to work and fit in, get along with and communicate effectively with the people you work with.

3.) The right job is on a shift or schedule that doesn’t interfere or conflict with your home or personal life.

4.) The right job is close enough to home that you can get to work on time everyday without spending all your time and money getting there.

5.) The right job pays enough that you can afford to pay your bills and feel that you're being adequately rewarded for the work you do.

By the same token, the right job needs The Right Employee. Finding effective workers is what recruiters and hiring managers do. Attributes of the right employee can be summed up as follows:

1.) The right employee is one who knows how to do the required work and who wants to do that type of work. Just because someone can do the job doesn’t mean he wants to.

2.) The right employee is eager and able to learn new things.

3.) The right employee will work hard to fit in, get along with and communicate effectively with the people employed at the company.

4.) The right employee has the resources (i.e. reliable transportation) and the desire to get to work on time every single day.

5.) The right employee can afford to work for the wages the job offers and understands that the wage needs to be earned.

Now, go out there and find the right job for you!
