How to Write a Civilian Resume - Tips & Advice

Resumes & Cover Letters

Years ago, I found that many veterans speak 'military' in their resumes because they have had no help with resumes they present for civilian work. The hiring companies become confused with the terms they don't relate to. Result: No interview.

Some tips that I have learnt over the years:

1) De-Militarize Your Resume: This means taking the military jargon out and converting your experience into civilian recognizable terms like: leadership, attention to detail, and works well under-pressure.

2) Present the Big Picture: Don't just give a snap shot that only military service members would understand, but give the big picture. Make sure to include how many personnel you oversaw, what type of technical skills you have, and how large a budget you managed.

3) Use the Veteran Resources Available: There are so many resources available to veterans. Post-9/11 Veterans can sign up for an ACP Mentorship (https://mentoring.acp-usa.org/apply/protege/auth), which connects you to a corporate Mentor in your specified field of interest. Additionally, there are other resume-polishing resources.

That is what I do. No face to face meeting is required - all I need is an email attachment of
the resume version you may now have in Word. I review it, perhaps ask a few questions by email and finish by providing you with a finished version that could lead to success.

This is a goodwill service-no charge, as you earned it. My name is Bruce Montville,
