Finding and Securing Employment

Career Advancement

I have had many different careers in my life. None of the careers had a similarity, they were mostly selected because of necessity. I will try and be as brief as possible with my advice for those great US military men and women to assist them in securing employment.

When you were in the military you had a DI/sergeant that could always be there with some "motivation" for you....now your motivation is your family, you, your survival and so on. So, where do you start when it comes to finding good employment? I'm a true believer in increasing the odds of success in every aspect. This means going after the most offered jobs out there.

The most at this time have something to do with computers. Now those of you who think to yourself, "I can't stand computers ...they are boring". You are correct. However, the jobs are out there for them and they pay much better than working for a fast food joint.

You should ask yourself how you get one of those positions even if you don't have experience in computers, software, or technology. Well, you stop texting you buddies and use the computer to google things like:

Windows admin guide

Linux admin guide

VMWare admin guide

Download the guides and read away! Now this doesn't mean you are magically made into a computer engineer however, this will get you on to the right path. There are also many classes you can take at your local community college, online classes and so on to get certifications.

Once you have some knowledge under your belt and you want to take it for a spin, it's time to submit a resume for a technical position. Google the title of the positions and then put "resume" next to it: Example: Systems Administrator resume. This way you have an example of what it should look like for format and content.

I wanted to keep this brief, but I am available for any veteran that wants some additional advice.

Again, thank you for your service.
