PMI Chapters as Networking & Mentorship Venues

Mentoring

I have seen a number of questions like "Looking for Mentorship in Project/Operations Management in the XXXXXX Area" and the answer is always the same: contact your local chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI). PMI exists specifically to facilitate the growth of PM in their careers and ensure the professionalism of the project management field. I joined my local PMI Chapter as soon as I arrived in Huntsville AL, having taken off the uniform at Camp Lejeune. I had just attained the PMP and was interested in joining for the local networking opportunities. Within the first few years I also attained the PgMP and took on a leadership role, eventually becoming Chapter President. Although this was great for building the local network, I also found that serving on the Chapter Board provided a great venue to meet PMI Chapter Leaders from our region via Annual Regional Conferences, and Globally via Annual Global Leadership Meetings.

Any veteran who aspires to the operations/project management field should immediately join PMI (www.pmi.org) as well as their local chapter (Google PMI "your area"). You will likely find that the chapter also has LinkedIn and Facebook Groups as well as monthly opportunities for professional development and networking thru luncheons, breakfast programs and dinner programs. Many have low-cost PMP Prep Courses and social events as well. It's a great place to start whether you aspire to be Chapter President or just want a mentor.
